CNC Part Design & Manufacturability
An illustrated guide to CNC part geometry, tolerances, materials and inspection, with three worked design reviews and a reusable DFM checklist.

Prepare your CNC part for a manufacturing review
This 28-page white paper helps mechanical designers, sourcing teams and quality engineers prepare CNC milled and turned parts for a manufacturability discussion. It connects part function, tool access, workholding, material condition, tolerances and inspection.
The guide includes original diagrams, three worked design reviews and an interactive pre-RFQ checklist. Its examples use millimeters unless another unit is stated. The illustrations are teaching examples, not released manufacturing drawings or customer production results.
What’s inside
| Topic | Questions covered | Pages |
|---|---|---|
| Design intent and process selection | Which interfaces must remain fixed, and how does the geometry affect the machining route? | 3–4 |
| Access, pockets and workholding | Can the tool, holder and fixture reach the features? How do corners, undercuts, thin walls and restraint affect the review? | 5–10 |
| Holes, threads and turned features | Are hole depths, complete thread lengths and relationships between turned surfaces clear? | 11–13 |
| Tolerances, datums and inspection | Which limits protect function, and how will the delivered part be accepted? | 14–16 |
| Materials and finishing | What grade, stock condition, surface texture and final dimensions are required? | 17–20 |
| Worked design reviews | Review a pocketed housing, an installation bracket and a precision sleeve. | 21–23 |
| Cost, RFQ handoff and checklist | Compare the full scope of work, prepare the release package and record open DFM questions. | 24–26 |
| Sources and further reading | Find the publisher references used throughout the guide. | 27 |
Three practical ways to use it
- Before releasing a drawing: identify the functional interfaces, permitted changes and features that need a manufacturing review.
- During a supplier discussion: use the diagrams and worked examples to explain access, clamping and acceptance questions.
- Before requesting a quote: complete the checklist on page 26 and keep unresolved items with the drawing package.
How to apply the guide to your part
Use the guide’s questions to review the geometry, material, process and inspection conditions for your part. Wall thickness, machining limits and any tolerance changes need a review of that design. Agree final requirements and acceptance methods before production.
The checklist includes interactive fields. Save it with a PDF reader that supports forms, then reopen your copy to confirm your entries have been retained. You can also print the checklist.
