POM / acetal for sliding and locating parts

POM combines low moisture absorption with useful sliding properties. Specify POM-C or POM-H, rather than treating all acetal stock as identical. A drawing that names a particular brand or grade needs that requirement carried into the quote. [2]

Acrylic is a candidate where a clear view through the part matters. Identify the viewing faces and edge appearance separately from dimensional tolerances; a machined surface is not automatically an optical-quality surface. [4]

Milling pockets, faces and hole patterns

A milled plastic part needs support while material is removed. Send the model and drawing with pocket depths, thin walls and locating features identified. We can then discuss tool access, the surfaces used for clamping and any features that need a separate finishing setup.

Turning bores, shoulders and mating diameters

For bushings and spacers, define the surfaces that control the assembly. Include the useful bore depth, edge breaks, thread form and limits on workholding marks. The bore and outside diameter should be reviewed together when the wall is thin.

Multi-axis machining may help with features on different faces, but the workholding and inspection access still need to suit the geometry. A process proposal should explain how the part will be held and checked, not simply name a machine.

Details to resolve before machining a plastic part

Thin walls need usable support

Mark thin sections, deep pockets and long unsupported features. Show where support or clamp marks are allowed, and which surfaces cannot be altered. Discuss any suggested wall, corner or stock-size change before releasing the drawing.

Threads and inserts need an assembly plan

State the thread form, useful depth and how often the joint will be assembled. Where inserts are required, include the insert drawing or part number, retention requirements and whether installation is included in the order.

The environment belongs in the specification

Include humidity, contact fluids, cleaning agents and operating temperature. Nylon is particularly worth reviewing for moisture-related size change; acrylic machining can introduce stress that may require an agreed relief step. [3] [5]

Color and fillers are not interchangeable

Specify the polymer, grade, supplier restrictions, reinforcement and color. A proposed substitute remains a proposal: changes to the compound or stock route should be approved and recorded rather than assumed from a similar material name.

Agree a tolerance for the actual part

There is no single tolerance that applies to every plastic, size and geometry. Keep critical dimensions distinct from general dimensions, and state the condition in which they must pass. We review the material, feature access and inspection method before accepting the requirement.

Deburred / edge-finished

Specify edge breaks and any no-break edges. Internal passages need their own burr and loose-particle acceptance criteria.

Identify the viewing faces and final size. Agree the polishing method and any stress-relief sequence for the selected stock.

Drawing-specified finish / marking

Provide the finish or marking specification, its location and the evidence required. Compatibility is reviewed for the exact polymer.

What to check before accepting the parts

Identify the material, not just the color

Request the exact records needed for your order: supplier and grade identification, stock or batch references, and any required declarations. Define how material identification should be carried through machining, packing and delivery.

Match the report to the drawing revision

Specify the dimensions to report, the revision used and the agreed measurement condition. A material document does not replace a dimensional report, and an inspection report does not establish the suitability of the design for service.

Approve appearance and cleanliness separately

For clear faces, clean assemblies or scratch-sensitive parts, define handling and acceptance before production. Tell us about allowed residues, protective wrapping, labeling and whether a sample must be approved before the full batch is released.

What changes the cost of a machined plastic part?

Stock and the specified grade

Ask for the exact compound, stock form and procurement assumptions to appear in the quote. A special color or approved-source restriction should not emerge after the order is placed.

Geometry and final acceptance

Deep pockets, thin sections, critical fits and appearance requirements each affect the work needed. Highlight the genuinely critical features instead of applying the tightest requirement to every surface.

Samples and repeat quantities

Request pricing for the quantities you actually expect to order. Keep sample approval, preparation work and recurring part costs separate so a prototype price is not mistaken for a repeat-production price.

Which plastics can I discuss with vetcnc?

This page covers PEEK, POM / acetal, nylon and acrylic. Send the exact material specification, stock form, color and required records. Other polymers can be reviewed, but a listed material is not a claim of current inventory or confirmed suitability for every geometry.

How do I choose between POM and nylon?

POM has low moisture absorption and useful sliding properties. Nylon offers a different balance of toughness and moisture behavior. Give us the load, motion, mating surface and environment; selection should be checked against the actual grade data and your design. [2] [3]

Can you machine PEEK parts for elevated temperatures?

PEEK is a high-performance polymer used where thermal and mechanical demands occur together. State the exact grade, continuous and peak temperature, exposure time and load. Suitability and machining feasibility are reviewed for that specification rather than assumed from a generic temperature rating. [1]

Will a machined acrylic part be fully transparent?

Not necessarily on every face. Identify which faces are viewed through, the acceptable marks and any required polishing. Agree appearance and dimensions separately, including a reference sample when useful. [4] [5]

What tolerances can you hold on plastic parts?

Send the drawing with the critical dimensions and datums identified. We review the polymer, geometry, stock condition, feature access and measurement method before accepting tolerances. A blanket tolerance on this page would not describe every part reliably.

Should nylon be measured dry or after conditioning?

That needs to be agreed for the application. Nylon absorbs moisture, and this can change dimensions and mechanical properties. Put the intended moisture or conditioning state and acceptance method into the specification. [3]

Can I replace a metal part with the same shape in plastic?

Do not treat a material change as only a change of raw stock. Review the assembly load, temperature, clearances, fastening method and acceptance criteria with the drawing authority. A proposed plastic version should be evaluated before it replaces the original design.

Can you add threaded inserts or markings?

Include the insert specification or part number, installation requirements, retention checks and marking location. We can then review the requested work and confirm what is included in the quote. Do not assume every insert or process suits every plastic.

Do you supply material certificates or application declarations?

Tell us exactly which records are required and the material source restrictions. Required documents and the scope of verification must be agreed before sourcing. A generic polymer name does not establish compliance for a finished component.

Do I need a prototype before ordering a batch?

A sample is particularly useful when assembly fit, appearance or handling needs confirmation. State the approval criteria and whether production must wait for written approval. Sample quantity, timing and batch release are agreed with the quotation.

What should I send for a plastic machining quote?

Send a matching 3D model and dimensioned drawing, the exact material requirements, quantity and required delivery date. Add the operating environment, important dimensions, finish, sample approval and inspection records. The brief on this page helps collect those details.

Will my drawings go to another factory?

Discuss confidentiality and the permitted sharing scope before sending restricted files. If the project needs a partner, agree the arrangement and responsibility with vetcnc first; direct introduction is also an option to discuss.
